Skansen, the open-air museum on Djurgården in Stockholm, has held a Christmas market since 1903. Around 70 stalls fill Bollnästorget, the museum's market square, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in Advent – in 2026 from Friday 27 November to Sunday 20 December. It is one of Stockholm's best-loved Christmas traditions; as it is inside the museum, you need a ticket.

Dates and opening hours 2026

The market is open on four Advent weekends: 27–29 November, 4–6 December, 11–13 December and 18–20 December. On Fridays and Saturdays it is open 10am–5pm, on Sundays 10am–4pm. From Monday to Thursday the stalls are closed.

What is on sale

The market began in 1903 in the style of the charity bazaars of the time, run by Skansen staff and members of its folk dance troupe. Today the stalls sell food for the Swedish Christmas table, marzipan, Christmas bread and local crafts in textile, wood, ceramics and wool. To eat on the spot there are kolbullar – thick pancakes with salt pork, fried over a fire – waffles, glögg (Swedish mulled wine) and roasted almonds, and Lucia and Christmas choirs walk between the stalls.

Tickets and paying

The market is inside Skansen, so you pay the museum's ordinary admission. The price varies with the season and is lowest when you buy online. Children aged 0–15 get in free but need to book a free ticket. Skansen's entrances and shops are cash-free, as are most of the market's stallholders, so bring a card. Swish, the Swedish mobile payment app, needs a Swedish bank account.

From Arlanda Airport to Skansen

The Arlanda Express train takes 18 minutes to Stockholm Central Station and leaves every 12–15 minutes. The SL commuter train is slower (38 minutes) and cheaper, but adults pay a SEK 157 station fee at Arlanda unless it is included in the ticket; under-18s pass free. The Flygbussarna coach takes about 40 minutes to Cityterminalen, next to the Central Station. From there, tram 7 from T-Centralen runs out to Djurgården. Bus 67 from Odenplan stops at Skansen, and ferry 82 from Slussen docks at Allmänna gränd, 400 metres from the museum. At the metro gates and on SL buses you can tap in with a contactless Visa, Mastercard or American Express card; cash is not accepted on board. Parking on Djurgården is very limited.

The other Christmas market in the city centre

The market on Stortorget in Gamla stan, the Old Town, is free to enter and open every day in the run-up to Christmas, so it fits the weekdays when Skansen's market is closed.

How this page is made

This page is written for visitors from abroad, not translated from the Swedish one. The dates come from the same market data as the Swedish page; the opening hours, ticket rules and directions were checked by hand against Skansen's own pages on 27 September 2026, and the airport trains, coach and SL tickets against Arlanda Express, Swedavia, Flygbussarna and SL on 3 October 2026. When the organiser's details change in the market data, this text has to be checked and updated before the site can be rebuilt.
