Stockholm Christmas markets 2026 – Skansen, Gamla stan & more

Stockholm's two classic Christmas markets are Skansen, the open-air museum on Djurgården, which has held one since 1903, and Stortorget, the main square of Gamla stan (the Old Town). Skansen's market is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 27 November to 20 December 2026; Stortorget is open every day in the run-up to Christmas, but its 2026 dates are not out yet. Below: opening hours, tickets and directions for both, the smaller markets in town and out by Lake Mälaren, and how to get in from the airport.

Skansen Christmas market 2026

Skansen's market started in 1903 in the style of the charity bazaars of the day and has become one of Stockholm's best-loved Christmas traditions. It is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 27 November to 20 December 2026: 10am–5pm on Fridays and Saturdays, 10am–4pm on Sundays. The stalls on Bollnästorget sell food for the Christmas table, marzipan, Christmas bread and local crafts in textile, wood, ceramics and wool, and there are kolbullar (salt-pork pancakes fried over a fire), waffles, glögg and roasted almonds. The market is inside Skansen, so you pay the museum's normal admission, which varies with the season and is cheapest online; children aged 0–15 get in free but need to book a free ticket. Tram 7 from T-Centralen runs out to Djurgården, bus 67 from Odenplan stops at Skansen, and ferry 82 from Slussen docks at Allmänna gränd, 400 metres away. Parking on Djurgården is very limited.

Stortorget in Gamla stan

The market on Stortorget is Stockholm's oldest. It moved back to the square in 1837 and has been held there every year since, apart from 2020 and 1907–1914, when the square stayed dark until the association Stockholms-Gillet revived the market on 20 December 1915. The Gillet still runs it. In 2025 there were 41 stalls, open every day from 22 November to 23 December – 11am–6pm Sunday to Thursday and 11am–7pm on Fridays and Saturdays. The 2026 dates have not been published yet; they will be added here as soon as they are. It is an open square, so there is no ticket.

Smaller markets in town and around Lake Mälaren

In the city centre, Schysst Jul fills ABF-huset at Sveavägen 41 on 5–6 December 2026 (11am–4pm both days) with fair-trade goods and crafts from aid organisations and small companies; entry is free and Rådmansgatan on the green metro line is a few minutes' walk away. Out of town, Sigtuna holds its market along Stora gatan and the square on the four Sundays of Advent (29 November, 6, 13 and 20 December 2026, 11am–4pm), and Wenngarn Castle, also in Sigtuna municipality, has just over 40 craftspeople in the orangery and park on three Advent weekends (28–29 November, 5–6 December and 12–13 December 2026, 11am–5pm) with free entry and parking. Taxinge Castle by Lake Mälaren, known as Kakslottet (the Cake Castle) for its huge cake table, has over 90 craftspeople at what the organiser calls one of Sweden's oldest Christmas fairs, on 13–15 and 19–22 November 2026; admission is SEK 100 on Thursdays and Fridays and SEK 120 at weekends, and free for under-12s with an adult. Torekällberget, the open-air museum in Södertälje, has a 19th-century Christmas on 5–6 December 2026, 11am–4pm, with a Lucia procession at 4pm on the Sunday. Stenladan at Steninge Slottsby in Märsta is more Christmas shop than market, but open every day – in 2025 from 8 November to 23 December.

Getting there and paying

From Arlanda Airport, the Arlanda Express train takes 18 minutes to Stockholm Central Station and leaves about every 15 minutes. The SL commuter train is slower (38 minutes) and cheaper, but adults pay a SEK 157 station fee to pass through the gates at Arlanda; under-18s pass free. The Flygbussarna airport coach takes about 40 minutes to Cityterminalen, next to the Central Station. In town, you can touch in at the metro gates and on buses with a contactless Visa, Mastercard or American Express card – no SL card or app needed – but you cannot pay cash on board. Sigtuna is reached by commuter train to Märsta and then SL bus 570 or 575, or directly from Arlanda on bus 579. Bring a card rather than cash: Skansen's entrances and shops are cash-free, as are most of its market stallholders.

All 10 Christmas markets in Stockholm 2026

Markets with confirmed 2026 dates come first; for the rest you see when they are usually held. Most of those fall on the Advent weekends, which in 2026 are 28–29 November, 5–6 December, 12–13 December and 19–20 December. The market pages are in Swedish, but the dates, venue and map are easy to follow:

How this page is made

This page is written for visitors from abroad. Every date, opening time and price on it comes from the organiser's own website, and the travel details from the airport and transport operators; they were checked between 27 September and 3 October 2026. Nothing is fetched automatically – when an organiser publishes new dates, the page is updated by hand. Sources:
